An occupational therapist determines the level and type of assistance the person requires in order to live as independently as possible. The assessment also provides recommendations relating to equipment and home modifications. It is also a useful tool to measure against a person’s physical capacity.

Job task analysis or physical demands assessment, involves an examination and breakdown of the skills and demands specific to a particular task or duties within the workplace. The assessment is conducted by an experienced occupational therapist or physiotherapist. Job task analysis’ provide an essential tool in negotiating suitable duties for injured workers with treating doctors and other health care providers. They can also be used to help employers and recruiters to match job candidates based on the physical demands of a job.
Occupational dictionaries are valuable resources in providing treating medical practitioners/ allied health professionals with accurate information pertaining to the critical physical and psychological demands of tasks performed at a particular worksite. Treating medical practitioners are able to utilise this information to assist with the establishment of a realistic return to work goal and to also make informed decisions on an injured worker’s fitness to carry out specific duties (with modifications where necessary) as part of their return to work plan. This not only reduces downtime and loss of productivity for the employer but also assists with minimising overall worker’s compensation premiums and lost time injuries as treating medical practitioners have a greater understanding of the workplace and the availability of suitable duties to assist with the return to work process.Occupational dictionaries can also potentially be used for pre-employment screening purposes, to assist with the determination of whether candidates are suitable for the position in which they are applying for given the physical requirements of the job.
